Abstract

Due to an increasing need for climate adaptation, many so-called ‘climate services’ have been developed. These services provide decision-makers with climate-related information. The problem, however, lies in the interaction between developers of these climate services and end-users. It seems that more often than not, climate services are not fully tailored to end-users wishes, needs, frameworks and existing knowledge. Since climate services are often highly visual tools, this thesis aims to research to what extent climate services are developed from a perspective of visual communication. Multiple qualitative case studies were conducted and various developers of climate services have been interviewed on the topic of visual communication and the development of the tools they each helped produce. From these interviews, multiple visual discourses were distilled. It was concluded that while overall an effort had been employed to create readable services, some strides could still be made when it comes to creating usable climate information and climate services.
