The aim of this thesis is to explore whether TOD can make a meaningful difference in replacing traditional urban sprawl with sustainable urban densification in mid-sized cities. In doing so, a case study was developed in which 3 transformations in medium-sized cities were assessed using 6 pillars of transport oriented development. This research started by developing a literature review to explain the concept of TOD. It also examined various theories for sustainable urban growth. Next, desk research was used to analyze the status of growth policy on a national scale with regard to mid-sized cities. Lastly, a case study was developed, involving 3 transformations in mid-sized cities: Den Bosch, Zaanstad and Nijmegen were explored using a TOD framework.
