Abstract

This thesis studied the effect of startup obstacles on the growth potential of university spin-off firms (USOs) among USOs from Radboud University and looked into four specific startup obstacles USOs commonly are confronted by: financial, marketing, network and employee recruitment obstacles. Previous studies indicated contradicting importance of these obstacles. On the one hand, Shane and Stuart claimed that startup obstacles are detrimental to an organization and its growth potential (Shane and Stuart, 2002). On the other hand, the resource-based view by Penrose as well as Stinchcombe and Miles claimed that an organization improves because of these obstacles as struggling to overcome these obstacles allows the organization to learn (Penrose, 1959; Stinchcombe, 1965; Miles, 1982). Marketing obstacles and financial obstacles support Penrose’s temporal view of the effect of obstacles: Both obstacle types are negatively impacted in terms of revenue and employment growth potential in the short term while in the long term, this effect diminishes to where the effect is not significant anymore. The other two obstacle types, employee recruitment obstacles and network obstacles portrayed an effect that was not as straightforward to determine: the effect is present but not strong and not significant in the long term. Therefore, USOs confronted with many network obstacles or employee recruitment obstacles show a different pattern from the other two kinds of obstacles and neither the structural or the temporal view can be confirmed.
