Abstract

This research assesses problems with operating room (OR) capacity of the ophthalmology department of an academic hospital and evaluates the organizational structure within the OR complex. This study answers the research question “how does the organizational structure of the ophthalmology department influence the problems with OR capacity?” by means of a mixed-method approach that entails both qualitative and quantitative analyses. The quantitative analysis is performed with simple statistical analysis in SPSS and entails over 1,000 cases with data on 20+ variables. The qualitative part explores the organizational structure of the ophthalmology department with regards to the OR by means of 12 interviews and a document analysis. The main conclusion of the study is that there are suggestions that the organizational structure does in fact correlate with problems with OR capacity utilization.
