Abstract

This study aims to address the phenomenon of imperatives as pragmatic particles in Mexican Spanish and Peninsular Spanish. The main research question that the study seeks to answer is how imperative particles in Mexican Spanish and Peninsular Spanish differ. This corpora based study analyzed recordings of real conversations in Mexico and Spain. It was anticipated that differences between Mexican Spanish and Peninsular Spanish would be discovered – either in discourse functions or frequency of imperative particles. The results showed the distributional differences of imperative particles in both dialectal varieties as well as some differences in the expression of macro and micro functions. The current research sets out to contribute to the typology of imperative particles in Spanish and unveil the role of region on pragmatic variation.
