Abstract
The rapid development of social media communication practices has made for an environment where users extend intercultural communication to not just people from their own communities, but from all over the globe. It is a powerful tool that facilitates interaction and exchange of ideas with foreign cultures, while being able to ignore the physical distance between them. This study examines the relationship between the Dutch, American and Spanish company ‘X’ (previously known as Twitter) accounts of the streaming services Netflix, Disney+ and HBO Max while focusing on their language use. A content analysis was performed to analyse a total of 108 tweets, equally dispersed over the different streaming platforms and their cultural origin. The results showed that majority of the posts illustrated a low power distance. Additionally, possibly due to the informal nature of social media platforms such as ‘X’, most of the posts maintained an informal language style. Lastly, the emotive language present in the posts was perceived as neutral
