Abstract

Neurofeedback training has been successful in producing positive outcomes on a host of neurodevelopment disorders, however, there exists a push to use neurofeedback training to improve cognitive processes in healthy individuals that can have sustaining effects. This study focused on fm-theta power (4-8Hz) as it has been associated with cognitive control processes. This study utilized neurofeedback training on healthy participants to examine if they can modulate their theta levels while using a portable and dry electrode EEG device called the MUSE. We also examined if such modulation of theta using the MUSE produced any cognitive performance enhancements while completing a Sternberg task and if participants can modulate theta without feedback. Two participants were able to control theta during the neurofeedback training. No participants displayed behavioral performance changes in the Sternberg task. Implications for the future of neurofeedback research and MUSE application are discussed. Keywords: Neurofeedback, Cognitive Control, EEG, BCI, Cognitive Enhancement
