Abstract

In this thesis, I have researched how the Lower German Limes is represented in both the Netherlands and Germany. Since both countries are nominating this heritage for the World Heritage List, it would be logical to present it as one heritage. By investigating policy documents, several sites and interviewing several policymakers, I have tried to see what sort of identity is formed by this heritage and whether the image of the Lower German Limes is consistent in both countries. Results indicate that there is a discrepancy between both countries, focusing more on their local and national identities than on a transnational identity. Several reasons are the economic benefits, creating awareness among the national public and heightening the chances of successfully applying for the World Heritage List.
