dc.description.abstract | The film industry in the current years can be identified by the increased production of the film re-envisions of the classical stories taken from the cultural canon, that are engraved in the minds of global audiences as fixed and unalterable. Considerably, some of the newer films aim to challenge the conventions and stereotypical character tropes by situating them in a more modern context. In this Bachelor thesis, I will examine the previously obscure antagonist’s perspective in Disney films, which was introduced in the 2014 fantasy drama Maleficent directed by Robert Stromberg. In the revisionist film based on Sleeping Beauty fairytale, Maleficent is interchangeably placed in the villain’s, hero’s and victim’s positions, which indicate her character’s complexity and authenticity as a reflection to changes in social circumstances. The thesis will provide an examination of the marginalised character representation and will question its role reflecting the current socio-political realities in the present cultural context concerned with gender stereotypes. | en_US |
