Abstract

The research in this thesis is concerned with literature about Titanic. The historical phenomenon was captured in the 1997 film by James Cameron and had an enormous influence on the perception of the historical event today. This research looks at the potential influence of the film on literature about Titanic. Three novels published between 1995 and 1996 are compared to three books from 2012. The construction of national stereotypes is the main focus for the comparison. Imagology is thereby important, because this theory looks at how national stereotypes are constructed in literature and the literary traditions which thereby came into being. The results of the research suggest that Titanic (1997) influenced the three 2012 novels, because of the positive image they create of the lower class and the negative image of the rich first class passengers which is similar to the image conveyed in the film, whereas the 1995-1996 novels show no such similarities.
