Abstract

This article argues that the intersection between Georg Lukács’s (1885-1971) concept of ‘reification’ [Verdinglichung] and Martin Heidegger’s (1889-1976) concept of ‘enframing’ [Ge-stell] presents a unique opportunity to understand present-day phenomena in which capitalism and technology are increasingly intertwined. The article investigates how these two concepts can be fruitfully brought together. Working from their departures from the Marxist and phenomenological traditions, respectively, I demonstrate that both authors present a matching move towards either incorporating subjectivity or objectivity. Specifically, in their conceptions of history it becomes apparent how both construct their respective concepts of reification and enframing in terms of an interaction between subjectivity and objectivity. This intersection paves the way for analysing novel forms of technology and capitalism in an innovative manner.
