Abstract

The Zoka Central Forest Reserve is located in Adjumani, Uganda. In this forest, deforestation is taking place. This deforestation influences the livelihoods of the communities around the forest. This research attempts to make the situation of deforestation in Uganda and in the Zoka Central Forest Reserve clearer, in the hope that something can be done against it. The role of the Ugandan national and local government, and the civil society organisation Friends of Zoka, in deforestation has been researched. This is done by studying scientific literature, policy documents on forestry, and conducting expert interviews. It seems that because of varying reasons, the government is contributing to deforestation. Friends of Zoka is fighting against deforestation in the Zoka Central Forest Reserve and therefore plays a positive role in the deforestation by trying to stop it. In addition, possible solutions to lessen and/or eventually stop deforestation, were described in the research.
