Abstract

Semarang is one of the most flood prone areas of Indonesia. It has seen many decades of flooding, and the forecast is that many more floods will hit the city. A lot of the causes of flooding in the area are out of reach of the population living in the area. However, there might be an element over which the local community might have influence. This element embodies itself in the form of the clogging of (micro-) drainage systems inside the neighbourhoods that are known to be flood prone. What are the causes of the clogging of these drainage-systems? And is there something the local community can do about it? This research aims at answering these questions. The conclusion of this research is that the problem seems to be two-sided. If there would be proper education of the inhabitants of these areas, a lot of the problems could be solved. On the other hand, a lot of the responsibility rests on the shoulders of the local government, who have to prioritize a structural approach of the problems surrounding flooding in Semarang.
