This thesis explores the linguistic strategies employed by Dutch media outlets, De Telegraaf and De Volkskrant, in their portrayal of Ukrainian refugees in 2022, situating the analysis within the framework of crisis rhetoric and the concept of the Stranger. Drawing on the works of McAuliffe et al., Ahmed, Boletsi, and Butler and Athanasiou, the research investigates how media narratives both shape and are shaped by broader cultural and political discourses. Through a qualitative textual analysis, the study identifies patterns in language, thematic focus, and framing strategies, comparing the ideological implications of reporting across these outlets. The first chapter establishes the analytical foundation by examining a selection of articles from the two outlets, employing textual analysis to assess the recurring themes, metaphors, and framing devices used to linguistically portray Ukrainian refugees. The second chapter delves into the findings and emerging narrative patterns within the news articles, situating them into broader theories of Othering and media narrativization. Ahmed’s conceptualization of the Stranger, McAuliffe et al.’s analysis of the relation between media and migration, Boletsi’s critique of crisis rhetoric, and Butler and Athanasiou’s exploration of dispossession inform the interpretation of how media mediate encounters between readers and refugees. The conclusion reveals how linguistic strategies are used by De Telegraaf and De Volkskrant to construct ideologically charged narratives surrounding Ukrainian refugees. The findings offer insight into the different narrative approaches of both outlets, which illustrate how media framing can contribute to shaping societal perceptions of migration. Ultimately, this thesis offers critical insights into the interplay between media, narrativization, and cultural discourse, contributing to a deeper understanding of migration rhetoric. Keywords: media framing, migration discourse, crisis rhetoric, refugees, narrativization.
