Abstract
This thesis investigates why the internal communication of professional Rainbow Six: Siege players appears cryptic to outsiders yet functions efficiently for teammates. Using mediated discourse analysis, it examines team-internal communication during a professional ESL match to show how meaning is shaped in interactions. Findings show that temporality, shared spatial knowledge and interpersonal relationships developed over a long period of time lead players to rely on highly indexical and intentionally elliptical forms of language. These mechanisms enable rapid coordination by distributing meaning across shared contextual knowledge. Rather than signaling communicative deficiency, these strategies reflect pragmatic adaptations to a fast-paced, technologically mediated environment. The study argues that professional gaming offers a valuable case for understanding how language reorganizes itself within digital systems that structure action and interaction.
