Abstract

The aim of the research was to examine if co-housing communities can contribute to an inclusive neighborhood. For this research a convergent mixed methods core design was combined with a case study design. Three case studies were selected, two in Tilburg (Centraal Wonen De Meenthe and Centraal Wonen de Stam) and one in Almere (Centraal Wonen de Wierden). The literature review identified that the economic-, social-, and political dimension contribute to an inclusive neighborhood. The document analysis of municipal policy suggested that when residents feel more involved in their neighborhood, they feel invited to take initiative themselves. The interviews indicated that all three co-housing communities try to contribute to social inclusion in the neighborhood by hosting a yearly open day. And the results of the survey indicated that the respondents felt the most connected to their direct neighbors and the least connected to neighbors that live further away. The hypotheses, based on the literature review, suggested that bridging social capital of the co-housing community could contribute to an inclusive neighborhood. The empirical results of the research do not align with the hypotheses, therefore indicating that the contribution of co-housing communities to an inclusive neighborhood is limited.
