Abstract
Periphrastic doen is highly vital in Netherlandic Dutch, although it is also stigmatized. This paper investigates a number of language-internal factors (separability and frequency) and social evaluations (the prestige of periphrastic doen) to see why periphrastic doen is increasingly used in Netherlandic Dutch.
The first two experiments consist of a grammaticality judgement task (reading and listening format). The results show that passages with periphrastic doen were less acceptable than passages without periphrastic doen. There was, however, no impact of the factors separability and frequency on this preference.
The third experiment was a speaker evaluation experiment, in which listeners rated oral stimuli. These results show no difference in old (status) or new (dynamism) prestige or sociability, speaking with or without periphrastic doen. This shows that per-doen is not covertly downgraded or indexed as dynamic, despite the fact that it is part of non-standard Dutch.
