Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to discover whether several concepts introduced by Tolkien’s essay On Fairy Stories, specifically the ideas of sub-creation, mythopoeia and the three functions of fantasy, namely Recovery, Escape and Consolation, are still used in the creation of modern fantasy literature and if fantasy literature nowadays is still read for the same reasons as it was in the early age. This study includes two analyses of Holly Black’s The Cruel Prince, one of which will focus on the creation of fantasy literature with the concepts of sub-creation and mythopoeia. The other analysis of Black’s The Cruel Prince will use Tolkien’s functions of fantasy to display that modern fantasy literature is read and written for the reasons of Recovery, Escape and Consolation.
