dc.description.abstractAmidst unprecedented labour market dynamics as a result of policymakers’ attempt to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, retaining workers is a key concern for organisations in achieving their business goals. One way organisations can increase the sustainable employability of their workforce is by adopting an empowering leadership style. In successfully leading an organisation, eliciting trust from employees is critical. The topic of leadership and trust is highly relevant, as the transition to hybrid working conditions (partly working from home, partly in office) that was ignited by the pandemic may have a lasting impact on the way we have traditionally been looking at the relationship between leaders and their followers. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 229 employees working in various industries to test five proposed hypotheses. Results indicate that empowering leadership is related to sustainable employability and to leader trust. No mediating effect for leader trust was found, nor did working from home have any moderating effects. The study provides practical implications for leaders and HR professionals concerned with the empowerment of their employees and their workforce’s sustainability, while investigating the opportunities for remote working for their organisation.en_US
