Abstract
The 1309 persecutions of jews in the duchy of Brabant were not solely, as proposed by most historians, caused by the call for crusade by pope Clement V in 1308 and the precarious position of jews in medieval Christendom, but also the result of an urban anti-ducal revolt in several towns in Brabant, which was repressed violently by duke John II in 1305-1308. For the vindictive rebels, the close fiscal and legal relationship between jews and their aristocratic patrons in medieval European society, in this case the duke, created an opportunity to attack John II indirectly by killing local jews. Therefore, these persecutions were not only a symptom of an intolerant, violent and anti-jewish society, but also driven by groups consciously persuing their political interests.
