Abstract
In de jaren ’50 werd er in Nederland van vrouwen in de politiek verwacht dat zij de vrouw in de samenleving representeerde. Deze vorm van representatie werd door Hannah Pitkin beschreven als descriptieve representatie. Als er in het belang van andere werd gehandeld was dit volgens Pitkin substantiële representatie en als iemand als een rolmodel optrad en groepen in de samenleving een gevoel van eerlijke en effectieve representatie gaf, was dit symbolische representatie. In dit onderzoek zal er aan de hand van Kamerdebatten en krantenartikelen worden gekeken van welke vorm van representatie er sprake was bij Nederlands eerste vrouwelijke bewindslieden: Anna de Waal en Marga Klompé. Zij werden beiden bewindsvrouw in de jaren ’50 en moesten door hun functie een ministerie vertegenwoordigen, terwijl er in deze periode van vrouwen juist werd verwacht dat ze de vrouw in de samenleving vertegenwoordigden.
In the 1950s, women in politics in the Netherlands were expected to represent women in society. This form of representation was described by Hannah Pitkin as descriptive representation. Acting in the interests of others, Pitkin said, was substantial representation, and if one acted as a role model and gave groups in society a sense of fair and effective representation, it was symbolic representation. In this research, on the basis of parliamentary debates and newspaper articles, it will be examined what form of representation existed among the first female ministers of the Netherlands: Anna de Waal and Marga Klompé. They both became ministers in the 1950s and by virtue of their position had to represent a ministry, while during this period women were expected to represent women in society.
