Abstract
This Thesis aimed to explore the effects of using music for learning English vocabulary on a post-primary student population to decipher whether learning with songs enhances the same effect on lexis retention and perceived enjoyment as is seen in primary school children. The study aimed to measure and validate the efficiency of enjoyable learning experiences in young adults and students by creating new lyrics to the song Happy by Pharell Williams, consisting of terms and definitions to learn new vocabulary. Participants were split into two groups: one group sang terms and definitions to the song Happy, whereas the second group spoke these lyrics aloud. The average scores of both groups were analysed, and participants were asked about their enjoyment and perceived effectiveness of the lesson to see if music is a valid factor in vocabulary learning. Findings show that while the sung group seemed to score better on the vocabulary test and the follow-up test than the spoken groups, this different was not significant. However, the sung group also scored higher on enjoyment of the lesson. This was a significant difference. This thesis vouches for increasing the use of music as an enjoyable method to enhance current lessons.
