Abstract

In primary care, both allied health professionals and generalists play essential roles in addressing the complex needs of older adults. Since age-related problems are often complex and overlapping, older adults frequently require support from both groups. However, structured collaboration between allied health and generalist professionals remains limited and little is known about their interactions in interprofessional collaboration. Earlier research identified (in)effective actions professionals take in such situations, however, it remains unclear how these actions are selected in response to others’ behavior in strategic interactions. This study examines how the strategic actions of generalists and allied health professionals are associated with the behavior of the other professional. Using a cross-sectional vignette-based design, informed by game theory models, data were collected from healthcare professionals. The findings show that professionals often prefer information sharing and compromise, with the behavior of the other professional significantly associated with the actions chosen. Gender and profession were significant predictors of (in)effective interprofessional actions, with female professionals and occupational therapists showing higher likelihoods of effective actions. The aim of the study is to improve understanding of the strategic decisions professionals make in interaction with one another during interprofessional collaboration.
