dc.description.abstract | This qualitative case study aims to get a rich understanding of the self-management process of community centre Archipel in the Makassar square neighbourhood in Amsterdam-East. This process is approached from a home-making perspective. The relationship between the core group – those from the neighbourhood who are responsible for executing the plans of the self- management – and the neighbourhood residents living directly around the Makassar square on which Archipel is situated, is given particular attention. In total, sixty semi-structured interviews were held with residents and participatory observations were done throughout the fieldwork period. The self-management of community centre Archipel, the structure of which can be characterized as ‘loose sand,’ is a demanding process. Participation and involvement of residents proves to be a complex issue and residents hardly participate in the self- management process. This research shows the importance of studying community centres in relation to their environment. It concludes that current social policy in the Netherlands can be approached critically in relation to transferring more responsibilities to citizens. | en_US |
