This thesis will discuss my graduation project of designing new speaking tests for Dutch A1 at language institute Radboud In’to Languages. An overview of the theory behind language testing will be given, together with a chapter on the Common European Framework of Reference. After conducting a needs analysis, a triangulation of sources was used in the process of adapting old items and creating new items to design a new speaking test for Dutch A1. In addition, a chapter is devoted to suggestions for a new scoring grid for speaking A1, which involves the concepts of communicative competence and language strategies. This thesis will conclude with a reflection of my time as an intern at Radboud In’to Languages.
