Abstract

This thesis explores the representation of space within film, TV series, and video games, which is a complex subject area that can easily influence individuals’ emotional involvement. This research focuses on three examples, namely the 1977 film A Bridge Too Far directed by Richard Attenborough, the 2001 miniseries Band of Brothers created by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, and the 2013 interactive video game Battlefield V developed by DICE. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that audience’s emotions are not only based on engagement with material, but also linked to personal context. The case studies follow the same structure; first analysis of space within the content, then followed by an examination of narrative, and lastly the achievement of affect and emotions by mise-en-scene. The analysis reveals that it is possible to find anchor points from the real world and create familiarity with the fictional world and how playing with color, angles and settings can evoke different emotions.
