Abstract

Advisory bodies increasingly urge for an agricultural transition due to environmental, social and economic sustainability issues. The vagueness and different views on sustainable agriculture result in difficulties to find a way to govern this transition, while an in-depth understanding in the variety of farmer perspectives - the object of governance - is lacking. For this research fifteen young dairy farmers living in Noord-Brabant have been interviewed for half days in between the activities on the farm. This research describes how they frame the transition towards sustainable agriculture and assesses the factors influencing their framing. According to them the transition is about being able to invest in sustainability by improving the relationship between farmers and consumers, the creation of realistic and fair regulation and a stable and clear vision for the future through collaboration with all involved actors. From this it can be learned that it is important to recognise the different views to be able to work together in managing transitions.
