Abstract

This thesis offers an understanding of the 20th-century trope of the lesbian vampire by analyzing the movies Dracula’s Daughter (1936) and The Vampire Lovers (1970). The overarching theme throughout the thesis is the concept of Grindhouse movies, where violence and sexuality played a pivotal role. These movies have been chosen as examples of how lesbian vampires in grindhouse movies have developed in the 20th century as a reflection of societal structures regarding queer tolerance. This thesis is rooted in cultural studies and borrows theories from queer and film studies. Furthermore, it uses the cultural context of the movie scene in America in the 20th century. We will look into the censor boards of the previous century and how grindhouse movies became a form of counterculture. From there on, the case studies will show us the outcry from the queer community to be granted representation in movies and life alike.
