Abstract

In this paper, I develop a phenomenological analysis of sexual difference on the basis of Alfred Schütz’ concept of relevance. I start by offering an explication of relevance and its different variants. Based on my critical remarks, I then revise the concept and apply it to the problem of sexual difference. Using the methods of phenomenological description, I argue that a Schützian conceptualisation of gender in terms of relevances complements contemporary phenomenological discussions on sexual difference in two ways. First, it provides a description of the internal structure and dynamism of different manners of intentionally relating to the world characterising different sexual identities. Second, it makes explicit and clarifies both the natural and the historical-cultural roots of such gendered intentional styles.
