This research examines the mutual expectations that musicians in indie rock bands and potential private donors have about entering a gift relationship, akin to patronage. Earlier research on patronage in the arts has focused more on traditional forms of art, whereas this research investigates patronage in popular music, particularly in the indie rock scene. Theoretical insights from Bourdieu’s fields of cultural production and Keunen’s adaptations to this model, gift theory and Bourdieu’s forms of capital accompany an exploratory schematic overview of patronage relationships in popular music by Van den Braber. With this theoretical framework, three interviews with indie rock musicians and three interviews with potential private donors were conducted. The aim of these interviews was to see what expectations both parties formulate on a possible gift relationship and whether they might match up. Special attention was paid to the particularities that the indie rock scene has when it comes autonomy, artistry and conversion of forms of capital. The results show that, while Van den Brabers’s schematic overview can be applied to analyses of mutual expectations, there were some forms of capital seen in the interviews that are not yet incorporated in the aforementioned overview. Findings also indicate that gift relationships in the indie rock scene have a chance. However, the focus of both actors on making detailed plans for the prospective (economic) gifts might cause difficulties for developing these plans into a long-term relationship that is based more on mutual trust than on the current plan or project.
