Abstract
Within this inductive qualitative case-study, the obstacles and challenges that expatriate academics encounter when working at Dutch universities were explored. Thereby, the extent to which organizational support could help these expatriates in overcoming these hurdles was examined. Drawing on 15 interviews with expatriate academics working at Dutch universities as well as secondary data, language was perceived as most important barrier. As a result, the desire for language courses was frequently highlighted to overcome this barrier. In addition, several other obstacles emerged: the discrepancy in norms and values, the quest for an academic equilibrium and social rigidity. Whereas organizational support could not really provide a solution to social rigidity, it could reduce the discrepancy in norms and values and ease the quest for an academic equilibrium. By addressing these obstacles and the role of organizational support as a university, expatriate academics can be more effectively supported during their stay within The Netherlands.
