The central theme of this master thesis is the relation between migration and development, that has been viewed from two different perspectives, namely the academic and the policy perspective. The central question was: ‘What is the relationship between migration and development and to what extent is this relationship reflected in the policy note for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation of 2018?’ Textual and oral methods, consisting of literature reviews, discourse analysis and interviews, have been used to investigate this relationship and degree of conformity. From an academic perspective, the relationship between migration and development is referred to as the ‘migration and development nexus’. Although, the pessimists believe that migration influences the development of a country negatively, the prevailing view is that migration positively influences the development of a country. Because the negative effects of migration are emphasized in the policy note, the policy perspective shows similarities with the pessimistic view regarding the relation between migration and development. As a consequence of the gap between the academic and the policy perspective, policies based on this negative relation between migration and development are bound to result in a failure.en_US
