dc.description.abstractIn the Netherlands, a growing environmental discourse has led to a shift towards more sustainable urban mobility, with Dutch cities increasingly adopting car-free urban development strategies. These initiatives aim to reduce pollution, enhance mobility, and foster social inclusion, but public acceptance remains uncertain due to significant negative attention on social media. This thesis investigates the framing of car-free urban policies in the Netherlands, focusing on the disconnect between policy and public perspectives. A case study of the 2023 "de Knip" car-free pilot in Amsterdam is conducted using frame analysis of social media comments and policy documents. The analysis reveals discrepancies between the problems identified by policymakers and those perceived by citizens. Citizens often view the municipality as addressing hidden agendas rather than genuine issues, particularly concerning cars and freedom of movement. This research provides valuable insights for policymakers, urban planners, and stakeholders, highlighting the importance of aligning public and policy frames to improve acceptance of car-free initiatives. Understanding these framing divergences is crucial for navigating the challenges in implementing such policies.
