Abstract
The rising student debt in the Netherlands presents significant socio-economic challenges. While enhancing financial literacy can help, designing effective educational programs has proven difficult. Personalized learning methods, particularly personalized AI-avatars, show promise in improving financial literacy among students. These AI-avatars are interactive virtual characters that adapt to individual learning needs. This study aimed to assess how personalized AI-avatars affect cognitive load (the mental effort required to learn) and learning motivation, and whether financial concerns influence this relationship. Using a Wizard of Oz experimental design, 117 Radboud University students interacted with either a personalized or non-personalized AI-avatar. Cognitive load was measured through eye-tracking. The results indicated that personalized AI-avatars significantly boost motivation for acquiring financial literacy, especially among male students. However, they did not significantly lower cognitive load. The study also found that cognitive load, measured by fixations per second, reduces learning motivation, but financial concerns did not impact cognitive load or motivation. These findings suggest that while personalized AI-avatars enhance motivation, they do not necessarily lower cognitive load. The study's implications are significant for designing AI-based educational tools, potentially improving financial literacy and reducing financial stress among students, with broader applications in various educational contexts.
