Abstract
The present study investigated the link between language processing and cognitive control in native hearing bimodal bilinguals. More specifically, it aimed to directly link bimodal bilinguals’ ability to monitor and coordinate non-linguistic information to cross-modal language activation during spoken word recognition. In a visual world eye-tracking paradigm, bimodal bilinguals looked more and longer at the cross-language competitor image, of which the translation equivalent shared phonological features in Sign Language of the Netherlands (NGT) with the auditory-presented target word, than at matched unrelated distractors when listening to Dutch sentences. This cross-language competitor activation was then linked to the performance of two different cognitive control tasks, which required either inhibitory cognitive control or perceptive information integration. The current study presents a first hint of an association! between more efficient visual within-modality integration (faster response times) and reduced cross-language activation of NGT during Dutch auditory word comprehension.
