Abstract

Research recurringly finds that Team Psychological Safety (TPS) and Transformational Leadership (TL) are positively related. However, the four behavioral dimensions of TL (Individualized Consideration, Idealized Influence, Intellectual Stimulation, and Inspirational Motivation) have not been individually measured with TPS, nor has such research been done on informal leaders (formal indirect leaders). It was hypothesized that TL, and its four dimensions, would be positively related to TL, and TL would be higher among informal than formal leaders. 44 teams (consisting of total 141 individuals) completed an online survey investigating their formal/informal leaders’ TL and TPS. TL and TPS were not significantly related, and intellectual stimulation was even found to be negatively related to TPS. Formal leaders showed higher levels of TL. Hypotheses were not supported; however, exploratory analyses of all 184 individual team members revealed total TL and individualized consideration with TPS were positively related. Implications and future research recommendations are discussed. Keywords: transformational leadership; team psychological safety; formal leadership
