Abstract
In a country where most of the population lives below the poverty line, the shopping malls of Jakarta, Indonesia, stand as cultural symbols of class division, coloniality, and social systems. Ke PIM Yuk! explores the history of market spaces in the city during the Dutch colonial era, the gentrification of the Pondok Indah area during the 1970s, and how classist exclusionary practices take form in today’s Pondok Indah Mall franchises. To dive deep into these subjects, Ke PIM Yuk! utilises a mixture of cultural theory, urban theory, colonial theory, discourse analysis, visual analysis, and ethnographic research.
