This study investigated the moderating role of self-esteem and gender on the relation between parental control, feeling overly controlled by parents, influence in family decisions and the development of social anxiety. Different questionnaires were filled out by 1156 Swedish youths (50,2% female) from 11-19 years of age (M=12,91, SD=1,46). All variables except overcontrol did have an impact on social anxiety. Self-esteem did moderate the relation between parental control and social anxiety, indicating the buffering effect of self-esteem. No moderating effect of gender was found.en_US
