This research focuses on the impact of football stadiums on urban development in the Netherlands. This concept is defined in three main dimensions: area development, economic effects and socio-cultural function. First, a quantitative analysis is carried out, looking into neighbourhood statistics on various indicators, comparing ‘stadium areas’ to ‘non-stadium areas’ for multiple stadiums combined, looking for an overall picture of the Dutch context. This is followed by a qualitative case study of the Euroborg in Groningen, providing a more in-depth image of a specific stadium development project. The results of this study are not unambiguous; in all three categories some positive impacts can be observed, such as supporting a general area development, additional functions, infrastructural improvements, their role as entertainment amenity and a more intangible socio-cultural function, but on the other hand some elements of impact turn out limited or lacking. The research further highlights the importance of factors of influence both internal and external to the stadium development process. What is crucial in this respect, is to critically consider and examine the internal factors of influence, while the influence of external factors, the ‘context’ formed by both local and supralocal factors, that cannot be influenced itself, should be explicitly taken into account and adapted to in doing so.en_US
