The current study examines the effect of the annual appraisal interview on work engagement and goal orientation considering the feedback environment of the employees of a German insurance company. A cross sectional non-experimental questionnaire study containing 57 questions was conducted. 107 employees participated in the study. The results show no significant effect of the annual appraisal interview on work engagement and goal orientation. However, some variables of the feedback environment appear to have an impact on the employees’ characteristics. Perceived organizational support is a predictor for work engagement. Autonomy is a predictor for a learning goal orientation while supervisor support can predict a decrease in learning goal orientation. Keywords: annual appraisal interview. feedback. engagement. autonomy. perceived organizational support. learning goal orientation.
