Abstract

Research on framing in relation to political orientation has been previously investigated, however, this has not yet been linked to a Dutch national crisis. In this study, the content of 8 articles of NRC Handelsblad and 8 articles of De Volkskrant were inductively analyzed to investigate how the Schiphol crisis is framed within both newspapers. Furthermore, the differences between both newspapers have been put into their political context. Minor differences between both newspapers were found, including NRC Handelsblad showing a more liberal perspective and De Volkskrant being more critical towards the government. Three new frames were found and can be added to existing frames within the field: pressure-frame, reputation-frame and loser-frame.
