The focus of this thesis is on the effects of neoliberal reforms of the health sector on the engagement of non-managerial employees with environmental sustainability. To study this, a qualitative case study was conducted in the Academic Medical Centre (AMC) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Data collection took place through carrying out interviews, participant observation and document analysis. Influences of neoliberalism were visible in this hospital through a high focus on efficiency, the merger with another hospital, and the high focus on quality and quality validation. The results of this study show that neoliberal reforms affected employee engagement with environmental sustainability mainly in three ways. First, it increased the workload of employees to such an extent that they had little time and attention left for environmental sustainability at work. Second, it left environmental management thinking that it was best to minimise the flow of background information regarding environmental sustainability to employees. Third, it created a feeling among employees that the AMC did not do so much to improve its environmental sustainability and did not care about it. These three aspects reinforced each other and negatively affected employee engagement with environmental sustainability. These findings are problematic because employee engagement could be an important factor for hospitals to increase their environmental sustainability. Neoliberal reforms affect the entire health sector, which suggests that similar problems as described in this study could be found in other hospitals and healthcare organisations.
