Abstract

This master thesis explores the experiences of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) during the job application process in the Netherlands. By utilizing a qualitative, inductive approach, this study draws on in-depth interviews with nine individuals diagnosed with ASD to uncover personal and contextual factors influencing their experiences across four phases of the job application process: prior to application, preparation, job interview and post-interview. The findings reveal significant challenges related to social communication, meeting social expectations and navigating the unpredictable nature of job applications. Individuals with ASD often use protective mechanism such as over-preparing alongside coping strategies like projecting confidence and masking their true selves. These behaviors, often developed over time, serve as mechanisms to mitigate emotional stress and keeping a sense of having control. The study contributes to the existing knowledge on neurodiversity and employment studies by providing a nuanced in-depth understanding of the job application process from the perspective of individuals with ASD, highlighting both individual and contextual factors that impact these experiences. By applying the social model of disability, this research underscores the importance of societal and environmental adjustments to reduce barriers and promote more inclusive employment practices.
