Abstract
The aim of this research is to study the perception that top managers have of informal leaders, and how this is involved in the strategic decision making processes of the top management. The results of this research contributes to the existing body of literature about top management, in order to get a better understanding of the way top managers perceive informal leaders, and the way these perceptions are involved. This is done by first giving a detailed elaboration of the key concepts in this study, which are top management, informal leadership the link between these two, and a short description of strategic decision making processes. The data is gathered by making use of vignettes, in a qualitative, inductive research. The results show the different perceptions that top managers have of informal leaders. Furthermore, it shows how informal leaders have an important function within the organization, and that their experiences, knowledge and capabilities are involved in a substantial way in the strategic decision making processes of top management. The results can help top managers get a better understanding of how to deal with informal leaders within their organization.
