Abstract

This thesis studies the Eleusinian Mysteries and their relation to the Athenian practice of othering in the 5th century BC. By using theories on cognition, rituals and the effects of these on the individual, another level of othering has been studied. This layer exists on the level of personal experience. Othering on this level would create a divide akin to othering that was not consciously constructed as is the case with the examples given in the first few chapters. This allows othering to be studied more objectively, relying less heavily on assumptions of the intention of the Athenians in the 5th century than the other examples.
