Abstract

The focus of the current study was to determine whether the difficulty measure (N-term) of both VWO and HAVO exams can be explained by the vocabulary found in the said exams. The other focus point is whether the academic vocabulary (AWL) word frequencies are related to the difficulty measure of both exams. The hypotheses state that there should be a difference when comparing the difficulty measure (N-term) with respect to the vocabulary profile and word frequency. The most differences will be found in the AWL frequency, as the academic words are harder to learn. A set of 10 exams for HAVO and 10 exams for VWO were taken. There are two types of analysis for all four categories, vocabulary profile analysis and word frequency analysis. For the vocabulary profile of the exams, the Cobb’s Compleat Lexical Tutor was used and to analyse the word frequency of the SUBTLEXUK was used.
