This thesis aims to find the different ways that authors can use escapism in their novels. The three novels that will be analysed are The Book Thief, Gretel and the Dark and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Escapism is the theory that readers of a book can escape their reality for a while by emerging themselves into the imaginary world of the novel they are reading. However, in these three novels, the characters are the ones who are subjected to escapism. All of these books are set during World War II and all have children as the main character. This thesis will research how books and stories help the children escape their reality and how their imaginary worlds can help them survive the Second World War.en_US
