Abstract

This study gives insight into the responses of incumbents on the threat of the entry of sharing platform multinational enterprises (MNEs). Concerning the novelty of the sharing economy and the lack of inclusion of incumbents in the literature, an interpretive inductive research method is adopted. For the purpose of this study are local taxi companies considered as incumbents and Uber is considered as the disruptive sharing platform MNE. The conduction of ten semi-structured interviews with the incumbents has led to adapting to technological change, not responding, rebuilding legitimacy, and applying a niche strategy as the four overarching responses of incumbents on the entry of sharing platform MNE, Uber.
