dc.description.abstractInclusive play is only possible at accessible and inclusive locations. A lot of the play areas in Dutch neighbourhoods lack these standards, while every child has the right to play outside and develop themselves while playing. The research question “To what extent do municipalities stimulate inclusive play on their public and semi-public play areas?” was formulated to investigate how Dutch municipalities enable and stimulate inclusive play on public playgrounds. A survey held among these municipalities showed that 82% has a play-policy or comparable document, only the name, length and content of these documents varies a lot. 28% included handicap inclusive play in their play-policy and 54% has inclusive playgrounds. Qualitative research showed that, unlike the expectation of civil servants, ‘special equipment for disabled’ is not preferred. Accessible equipment that stimulates the playing together is more important and citizen participation can help offering insights on necessary adjustments. A play-policy with management plan are key for establishing inclusive play areas. When inclusive play is not part of the play policy, the policymaking process can be used to stimulate including this subject in the policy. Creating awareness and gathering knowledge are some of the most important aspects in this process.en_US
