Abstract

Rewilding runs into numerable problems, that express themselves both theoretically and practically. For rewilding to get unstuck and move forward again it is fruitful to look at related and compatible theories in the broader context of ecological restoration. Eric Higgs’ theory of wild design is a potential remedy for rewilding’s prominent ailments that also makes it the focal practice it should be; moving past the idea of a ‘pristine wilderness’ and re-engaging humans in the coevolution of the landscape – a story written by ecological and cultural processes alike. This will be illustrated by means of an exploration of philosophical discourse in ecological restoration broadly and rewilding specifically as well as a case study of the Millingerwaard.
